Interviews

WHO, the French pair who is turning House music inside out! (source on cueandplay.com)

WHO, the French duo composed of Lucas Orsateill and Victor Petroï, may not be a name you’re totally familiar with. Now if there’s one thing you can be sure of, it’s that pretty soon they’re going to be everywhere! Just look at the facts: last summer, they played at the Paradise after party, the Apollonia after party and did many private parties alongside artists such as Sven Väth, the Martinez brothers, Richy Ahmed and wAFF. They also rocked the Zoo Camp stage during the festival Burning Man – no less!

On top of that, their productions are fresh, groovy, and it’s part of why the wonderful Francesca Lombardo sang their praises in the interview she did with us not too long ago.

It’s their turn now to tell us how it all started!

C&P: Hi guys! In two words, can you introduce yourselves and tell us how you got into electronic music?

Lucas: Hey, I’m Lucas. I’m 26 years old and I live in Paris. My father is a musician/ singer/ composer. As a result, I’ve always been immersed in the world of music and recording studios. I remember that I climbed on my father’s drums and tried all of his instruments. Later, towards the age of seven, I started to play the piano and I continued for 5 years. Then nothing really besides some singing lessons and the conservatoire, but nothing more. Later, after realizing that I didn’t really want to be a Formula 1 pilot, a friend of mine came to drop off his turntables at my place while he was traveling, and that’s when I felt like I wanted to start playing. I started to go out and really pay attention to how the DJs were playing, I listened to their transitions and such. Finally, to work on my technical skills, I went to an Audio Engineering school in 2008 in Paris and the London School of Sound (LSS) in London from 2009 to 2011.

Victor: Same for me, I was practically born with music inside me. My father is a composer and put me on a piano really young. He really helped me to develop my passion. When I was 13, I had a Logic Dongle with some samples for EX-S24. I didn’t even know what I was doing. I was just playing some tracks that I knew on this old CASIO machine. Later on, I wanted to start playing more than producing, so my obsession was to discover as many tracks as possible. Some friends and I decided to create our own studio and then the SAE came around. I took a sound engineering formation so I could be really efficient and autonomous in the studio, and that was it.
